SDA vs SIL (quick explainer)
- SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) relates to the bricks‑and‑mortar home—purpose‑built dwellings with accessibility features.
- SIL (Supported Independent Living) funds the supports in the home—the staff who help with daily life, skills, and community participation.
- You can have SIL without SDA (e.g., private rental or family home), or SIL with SDA if you’re eligible and it’s the best fit. We’ll help you compare options and coordinate evidence for your plan.
Community & Social Participation (within SIL)
SIL isn’t only about inside the home—it’s about living well in your community. We support safe, inclusive access to hobbies, volunteering, education, fitness, faith, and culture. Think: cooking groups, art and craft, gym sessions, walking clubs, markets, and local events. Our teams can help you plan transport, manage costs, and build confidence meeting new people.
Short term & transition pathways
Your journey may include:
- STA (Short‑Term Accommodation) for respite or trial stays while you shape your routine.
- MTA (Medium‑Term Accommodation) while you wait for a permanent home or SDA outcome.
- SDA assessments and transitions if you require specialist housing features.
We coordinate the moving pieces, keep communication clear, and make sure your supports stay consistent.
Decision stage FAQs
How to get SIL funding under the NDIS?
You’ll usually need evidence from allied health (e.g., OT, behaviour support, nursing) describing your support needs, risks, and goals, plus quotes and a roster of care proposal. We can help organise assessments, gather reports, and submit clear documentation.
What’s included in Supported Independent Living?
SIL covers support in and around the home—daily personal care, mealtime assistance, medication prompts, household tasks, building skills, community access, and overnight support (sleepover or active nights). It doesn’t cover rent or the cost of housing itself (that’s SDA or mainstream housing).
Do I need SDA for SIL?
No. Many people receive NDIS SIL in private rentals, family homes, or community housing. SDA is only for participants who meet strict eligibility and need specialist dwelling features.
How are SIL rosters and costs set?
Together we design a Roster of Care (1:1, 1:2, or shared) that reflects your needs across days and nights. Costs are based on NDIS pricing arrangements for relevant support items. We provide transparent quotes and adjust the roster as your needs evolve
Can I choose who I live with?
Yes—compatibility is critical. We consider routines, culture, interests, communication, and risk to find the best match. If things change, we’ll work with you on a plan to improve the fit.
Accessibility, dignity, and safety
We maintain predictable, respectful, and trauma‑informed support. Risk plans, mealtime plans, PRN protocols (if applicable), and communication passports help teams provide consistent care. Families and guardians (where relevant) receive regular updates with your consent. Your rights, privacy, and choices are central to the way we work.
