Ventilation Support, Oral Suctioning, and Tracheostomy Care
Ventilation Support, Oral suctioning and Tracheostomy training
This training equips NDIS high-intensity support workers and Aged Care workers with the critical skills necessary for safely managing clients who require ventilation, tracheostomy care, and oral suctioning. Our training generally covers:
Introduction to Tracheostomy and Ventilation
- Purpose and types of tracheostomies
- Overview of respiratory anatomy and physiology
Tracheostomy Care and Maintenance
- Daily hygiene and stoma care practices
- Dressing and tie changes
- Tube management, cuff inflation/deflation, and recognizing complications (e.g., infections)
Suctioning Procedures
- Safe techniques for nasopharyngeal and tracheal suctioning
- Choosing appropriate catheter types and sizes
- Infection control practices
Emergency Management
- Recognizing and responding to airway obstruction or tube displacement
- Emergency tube re-insertion techniques
- Managing respiratory distress
- CPR considerations for tracheostomy patients
Mechanical Ventilation
- Understanding ventilator modes (CPAP, BiPAP, pressure-controlled ventilation)
- Handling ventilator alarms and troubleshooting
- Maintenance of ventilator circuits
- Monitoring oxygen saturation, CO₂, and respiratory rates
Communication and Swallowing Considerations
- Supporting non-verbal communication methods
- Assisting with speech therapy interventions (e.g., speaking valves)
- Ensuring safe swallowing and feeding practices for ventilated clients
Documentation and Reporting
- Accurate clinical documentation
- Reporting adverse events and complications
- Compliance with NDIS standards and clinical governance
Hands-on Practical Skills
- Scenario-based simulations and practical skill assessments
- Competency evaluation in suctioning, tracheostomy tube changes, and ventilation equipment management
