Oxygen Therapy and Monitoring
Oxygen Therapy and Monitoring
This training equips NDIS high-intensity support workers and Aged Care workers with the essential skills and knowledge necessary for safe and effective management and monitoring of oxygen therapy. Our training generally includes:
Understanding Oxygen Therapy
- Basics of respiratory anatomy and physiology
- Indications and purposes of oxygen therapy
- Types and functions of oxygen delivery devices
Administration and Management
- Safe setup and adjustment of oxygen flow rates
- Appropriate selection of oxygen delivery devices based on individual needs
- Humidification principles and equipment use
Monitoring and Assessment
- Accurate use of pulse oximetry to measure oxygen saturation (SpO₂)
- Recognizing signs of respiratory distress and hypoxia
- Interpreting oxygen saturation readings and understanding normal ranges
- Monitoring potential complications (e.g., skin breakdown, dryness)
Safety Precautions
- Proper handling, storage, and transport of oxygen equipment
- Fire safety measures and risk reduction strategies
- Infection control practices for oxygen delivery devices
Complications and Troubleshooting
- Identifying symptoms of oxygen toxicity and CO₂ retention risks
- Managing equipment malfunction or patient discomfort
- Emergency responses to respiratory distress or sudden oxygen desaturation
Documentation and Compliance
- Accurate documentation of oxygen therapy interventions
- Adherence to clinical guidelines, standards (e.g., NDIS, ACSQHC), and regulatory requirements
- Reporting adverse events and changes in patient condition
Practical Skills and Assessment
- Hands-on experience with various oxygen delivery devices
- Competency in pulse oximetry use and result interpretation
- Scenario-based simulations to enhance emergency response capabilities
- Accurate recording practices and adherence to regulations
